Our Shame

Mothers’ tears will never end,

because we continue to avert our eyes from a child
we know is starving,
and then justify our inaction because
they live half a world away.

When half a world away,
children are always crying,

and we know that they are starving,
but we justify our inaction because
we don’t have to see them every day.

While we ignore their suffering every day,
knowing they are dying,
hurt and always crying,

and even now they are starving,
we continue to justify our inaction because
they live a half a world away.

We claim that we are not responsible.

Yet we took advantage of their starving,
used their labor force to make a carving
in the war machine of capitalism.

We took advantage of their suffering,
kept them trapped and constantly buffering
the globalized inversion of slavery.
And we still
boast of our nations’ bravery?

So knowing they are dying,
hurt and even crying,

knowing that they are starving,
we still pretend that they do not have an effect on us.

We justify our inaction
because we don’t have to see them every day,
after all, they are a half a world away.
